Arma 3 is a sandbox — the game your group plays depends almost entirely on which missions and mods you run. Each game mode has different server requirements, different hardware profiles and different hosting considerations. Understanding what you’re actually running helps you choose the right plan.

Liberation campaign — most AI-heavy

Persistent liberation campaign where players progressively capture territory from AI-controlled forces. Dozens of AI patrols, garrison management, dynamic reinforcement calls and persistent world state make Antistasi the most CPU-intensive common Arma 3 game mode. Headless clients — what they are and when your Arma 3 server needs one

The headless client is Arma 3’s solution to its single-threaded AI limitation. Understanding when you need one — and how to configure it correctly — is one of the most valuable pieces of technical knowledge for any Arma 3 server operator.

What a Headless Client (HC) does

A Headless Client is Arma 3 running without any graphics or audio output, connected to your server, and dedicated entirely to processing AI calculations. Because Arma 3’s Real Virtuality engine handles all AI on one thread, a busy mission can push that thread to 100% while other cores sit idle. An HC takes over AI processing from the main server process, freeing the server to handle communication with players instead. The result is higher stable FPS on AI-heavy missions — noticeably improved in Antistasi with many active fronts, or in Zeus during a large unit spawn.

When you actually need an HC

You need a headless client when: your server FPS drops below 10 during normal gameplay (check with #monitor in-game admin), when running Antistasi or other persistent campaigns with 30+ concurrent AI, or when Zeus operations frequently involve large unit compositions. You do NOT need an HC for small friend group missions, vanilla Arma combat, KOTH (player-heavy, low AI), or any mission where AI counts are modest. Headless clients only help if your mission is actually scripted to distribute AI to them — not all missions support HC by default.

🎖 Configuring headless clients in server.cfg: Add these two lines to your server.cfg, substituting the HC machine’s IP address (use 127.0.0.1 if HC is on the same machine): headlessClients[] = {"127.0.0.1"}; and localClient[] = {"127.0.0.1"};. Note: Headless clients count toward your MaxPlayers limit — if your server cap is 40 and you run two HCs, only 38 player slots remain. Headless clients must be on the same LAN or the same machine as the server for the low-latency connection the HC requires. Bohemia Interactive’s wiki explicitly states they need to be on the same LAN at minimum, preferably the same computer. This means your managed hosting provider needs to support running both the Arma 3 server process and the HC process on the same physical server — confirm this before ordering if HC support is important for your setup.

A typical milsim modpack (ACE3, TFAR, RHS combined, CUP Terrains, additional DLC-equivalent mods) reaches 50–100GB. Many managed hosting plans have small default disk allocations — check whether disk space is expandable before ordering. Ask specifically about the modpack you intend to run.

verifySignatures — why it matters

Setting verifySignatures = 2 means players running unsigned or unknown mods cannot join. For milsim and modded servers, this is security against players joining with mismatched mods that can desync the simulation or introduce cheats. Every mod you use needs its .bikey file copied to your server’s keys/ directory. Without the key, players with that mod can’t join when verification is set to 2.

allowedFilePatching

Set to 1 to allow headless clients to connect while blocking regular clients with filePatching enabled (which can be a cheat vector). Value 0 blocks everything, 2 allows everyone. For most community servers, 1 is the right balance — HCs work, file patching cheats are blocked.

steamProtocolMaxDataSize

This undocumented parameter is critical for large modpacks. When you have many Workshop mods active, they “all break” simultaneously — players can’t join. This is caused by the Steam protocol packet size limit. Adding steamProtocolMaxDataSize = 1048576; to your server.cfg fixes it. Not documented officially, but widely used by large milsim communities.

basic.cfg controls how Arma 3 uses network bandwidth. On a UK London server with decent connection, the values above work for most scenarios. For KOTH servers with 60+ players, increase MaxBandwidth accordingly. MaxCustomFileSize = 0 prevents players from uploading custom face images which reduces bandwidth and a minor security risk.

Launch parameters override config file settings. Arma 3 servers are launched with command-line parameters like -mod=@ACE;@TFAR;@RHS_AFRF (mod list), -servermod=@TaskForceRadio (server-only mods) and -config=server.cfg -cfg=basic.cfg. FASTER (github.com/Foxlider/FASTER) — the modern replacement for the discontinued TADST — manages all of this through a GUI and handles Workshop mod downloads, deployment and command-line generation. Steam Workshop mods — installation, mod keys and verifySignatures

Unlike Icarus (.pak files, no Workshop), Arma 3 has full Steam Workshop integration. Workshop mods are available on managed hosting servers, though the exact process differs between “Workshop installer” panels and FTP-based manual management.

Mod keys — the step everyone forgets

Every Workshop mod you install on the server needs its .bikey file copied to your server’s keys/ directory. When verifySignatures = 2 is set (recommended), the server checks each connecting player’s mods against the keys in the keys/ folder. If a mod key is missing, players running that mod cannot join — they get a signature check failure error. Most mods include a keys/ subfolder with their .bikey file. Arma 3 server hosting UK — FAQ

A headless client (HC) is an Arma 3 instance running without graphics or sound, connected to your server and dedicated to AI processing. Because Arma 3’s Real Virtuality engine handles all AI on a single CPU thread, missions with many AI units push that thread to 100% while other cores idle. An HC offloads that work, improving server FPS in AI-heavy scenarios. You need an HC if: your server FPS drops below 10 during normal play (check with #monitor as admin), you’re running Antistasi with many active fronts, or Zeus operations frequently involve large unit spawns. You don’t need an HC for vanilla missions, KOTH, or small group operations. The HC must run on the same machine or same LAN as the server — not on a separate remote machine.
verifySignatures is a server.cfg setting that controls whether the server checks players’ mod files against digital signatures. Setting it to 2 (strict) means any player with an unsigned or unrecognised mod gets kicked. For any modded server, this is strongly recommended — it prevents players from joining with mismatched mod versions that cause desync, or with modified game files. For each mod you run, you need the mod’s .bikey signature file copied to your server’s keys/ folder. Most managed hosts handle this through their Workshop installer. Without the key in keys/, players with that mod will fail signature verification when verifySignatures = 2.
This is caused by the Steam protocol packet size limit — old routers and some network configurations limit the size of Steam query responses, and when you have many Workshop mods active, the total mod list exceeds this limit. The fix is to add steamProtocolMaxDataSize = 1048576; to your server.cfg. This is an undocumented parameter not mentioned in Bohemia Interactive’s official wiki, but it’s widely used by large milsim communities and has been confirmed to resolve the issue. If your mods all worked fine until you added the 15th or 20th mod, this is almost certainly the cause.
UDP 2302 (game port, the default), UDP 2303 (query port, always game port + 1) and UDP 2305 (Steam port, always game port + 3). If you change the game port, the other two update accordingly. Managed hosting providers configure all three automatically. For self-hosting, forward all three UDP ports in your router. The game port is what you give players for direct connect. The query port is used by the server browser and GameTracker-style tools. BattlEye uses the game port for its own traffic.
The -mod= parameter lists mods that both the server and all connecting clients must have. Players who don’t have these mods will be unable to join. The -servermod= parameter lists mods that only run on the server side — players don’t need them installed locally. Common servermod examples include TaskForce Radio server components and some admin tool mods. Using -servermod= for server-only components reduces the modpack size players need to download, which improves accessibility for new players joining your community.
Arma 3 received its “End of Life” announcement from Bohemia Interactive in 2022, with a final major update (Arma 3 Creator DLC: Reaction Forces) released in 2023. Since then, Bohemia has continued providing compatibility updates and critical bug fixes but no major content updates. Altis Life requires MySQL for persistent player data (money, vehicles, property, inventory). Set up a MySQL database through your host’s control panel or request one — Host Havoc provides MySQL access as part of their Arma 3 plans. Host Havoc offers a one-click Altis Life installer for both version 4.4 and version 5. Manually: download Altis Life from its GitHub or community site, place the mission .pbo in your server’s MPMissions folder, configure the database connection in the mission files, add the required mods (-mod=@CBA_A3;@Community_Base_Addons) and run the database schema. Version 5 is more feature-rich but harder to configure; version 4.4 is the established stable version most communities use.

It handles downloading Workshop mods via SteamCMD, deploying them to the correct folder structure, generating the correct -mod= launch parameter string, creating server profiles with different difficulty settings, and distinguishing between server-required, client-required and headless-client mods. For milsim unit admins managing large modpacks across multiple server profiles, FASTER significantly reduces the manual work involved in keeping mods updated and launch parameters correct. Most managed hosting providers expose the necessary command-line parameters through their panel; FASTER generates the strings you paste in.
